About Hy-Vee Inc
Hy-Vee, Inc. is an employee-owned corporation operating 233 retail stores in eight Midwestern states. In 2010 the company recorded $6.9 billion in total sales, ranking it among the top 25 supermarket chains and the top 50 private companies in the United States. Every day, Hy-Vee's 58,000 employee-owners carry out the company mission of making lives easier, healthier and happier. Hy-Vee was founded in 1930 by Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg, who opened a general store in the small southern Iowa town of Beaconsfield. Over the next few years, they opened more stores in southern Iowa and northern Missouri, often in partnership with their store managers.
In 1938, these partnerships incorporated as Hyde and Vredenburg, Inc., with 15 stores and 16 stockholders who traded their ownership stakes for stock in the new corporation. The company name later changed to Hy-Vee, a contraction of its founders' names. From that humble beginning, Hy-Vee has grown to become one of the nation's most dynamic and innovative retailers. To millions of customers throughout the Midwest, the name Hy-Vee is synonymous with quality products, outstanding values and superior customer service.
